Apply
The program is open to currently enrolled undergraduates, majoring in chemistry, biochemistry, or a field closely related to chemistry, particularly from institutions with limited research opportunities (including 2 year colleges). We strongly encourage underrepresented students and students with no research experience to apply. Applicants will be evaluated based on their letter of interest, transcript, and letters of recommendation. Only US citizens, US nationals, or US permanent residents will be considered.
Application deadline: March 1, 2025
Please have the following materials ready as pdf files before completing the application:
A copy of your undergraduate transcript. Unoffical transcripts are acceptable.
An up-to-date CV or resume. This document should include information on your education, lab skills, volunteerism and/or extracurricular activities, and any research (including previous REU) or job experience if applicable.
Letter of interest. This is a 1 or 2 page letter that:
a. Explains why you are interested in the USF REU in functional materials.
b. Details your career and educational goals.
c. Explains why the USF REU in functional materials will benefit your career/educational goals.
d. Contains a ranked list of at least 3 research mentors (listed on the Mentors and Projects pages) you would like to work with.
While we will normally match you with one of your preferred mentors, in your letter, clearly indicate your willingness to join if such a match would not be possible.
Also ask two references to submit letters of recommendation via ETAP by the application deadline. References should be professionals that can evaluate your academic or job performance, such as professors or supervisors. Letters from family or peers are not acceptable. Please allow your reference ample notice to write a strong letter on your behalf.
All applications need to be submitted through the NSF ETAP site.
