Q: When does the program start?

A: The program will start on May 19, 2025 and end July 25. The application deadline is 3/1/25.

Q: I am a USF Tampa student. Am I eligible to apply?

A: Yes, but priority is given to students from 2 and 4 year institutions without research opportunities. 

Q: I don't have any research experience. Can I apply?

A: Yes; in fact, we will prioritize applicants without prior research experience.

Q: I am enrolled at a community college. Can I apply?

A: Yes! Applicants from 4 and 2 year community colleges are encouraged to apply.

Q: I'm a sophomore. Can I apply?

A: Yes! Freshmen to seniors can apply.

Q: When will I be notified that I was accepted?

A: In April.

Q: I may require special accommodations due to a disability; what support do you offer?

A: Please reach out to us for a discussion of the program and your needs at the email below. We will work hard to accommodate your requests.

Q: Do I need an official school transcript?

A: No, you can use an unofficial transcript.

Q: I will graduate in May '25, can I apply?

A: No, you need to be enrolled as an undergraduate at your home institution over the summer.

Q: What is the time commitment?

A. The program is full-time, 10-week (40 hours per week), and you need to be present in person for the entire duration of the program.

Q: What does a typical day look like?

A: You will spend the majority of time in the lab, working on your project. Faculty and graduate students will teach you the lab skills needed to succeed, help, mentor and guide you.  Each week you will also participate in professional development workshops and in meetings with your research group and mentors. From time to time, there are socials and a few outings have been planned. At the end of the program, you will present your research at a campus-wide REU symposium.

Q: What project will I work on?

Q: Projects are described here. You will need to identify the top 3 projects you would like to work on when you apply, and we will do our best to match you.

Q: I have previously participated in an REU. Can I apply again?

A: Yes, but priority is given to students without research experience.

Q: What is Tampa like?

A: Tampa is a vibrant metropolitan city on the west coast of Florida. It has rich cultural, sports, entertainment and outdoor amenities, is close to spectacular beaches, and has a subtropical climate.

Q: Will housing be provided?

A: Yes, on-campus housing will be provided for free (in addition to a stipend).

Q: Do I need to pay for travel to the site?

A: Limited travel funds are available; decisions will be made on a case-by-case basis.

Q: I'm dual enrolled (high school and community college). Can I apply?

Q: High school students are ineligible for this program. Participants need to be undergraduate students, exclusively enrolled at a college or university.

Q: I live locally. Would I need to stay in the dorms?

A: No: you can commute if you prefer so. Please clearly indicate this in your application, so we don't overbook dorm rooms. Please keep in mind that everyday attendance in person is required for the duration of the program.

Q: Can I take summer classes/work during the REU?

A: No. The REU is a ten week, full time program (40 hours/week). You need to be present in person, and your exclusive participation in the program and its activities are required for the entire duration of the program. 

Q: I'm not an American citizen. Can I apply?

A: NSF requirements stipulate that only US citizens, US nationals, or US permanent residents are eligible.
